I'm ready to tend to my newly planted summer vege crops, so I can skip on down to pick some tasty leaves (and tomatoes) for dinner, or my sandwich, any time I feel like it - caterpillars allowing of course. We've planted some kale again for them this year, since they loved it so much last year that they left everything else for us... accidental sacrificial crops are definitely fine by me.
And let's be honest, I don't actually like kale that much any way. I only planted it last year because I felt like I should. It made me feel healthier even though I only ate it once, eep! Do any of you do that?
Oh summer, c'mon, I'm ready!

I love the quince flower photo, so pretty! On the kale thing, I planted some last year and the caterpillars weren't the problem, it was the whitefly; absolutely covered, couldn't even wash them off.

Hey Rachelle, I think we had both the whitefly and caterpillars! We had the Cavolo Nero variety, with the really bumpy leaves, and they just embedded themselves underneath.
DeleteI had picked the first batch to eat, got them inside and was kind of blown away by how hard it and gross it was to get them off! After that, I realised it just wasn't worth the time (and ick factor!) but the chickens loved it when we gave them the kale leaves. No clues as to why! Hehe :)
I had no idea about the frost part though - I think we planted way too late both last year and this year then.

What a gloriously lovely selection of springtime images. The colours here are just the perk-me-up I need as frost settles onto the ground here and winter starts to creep out from hiding once more.

I live in the Netherlands and instead of a health food kale is just a traditional food around here, eaten mashed with potatoes, some bacon and a smoked sausage - not all that healthy! The frost thing is true though, and it makes kale a perfect winter food!
ReplyDeleteMy chickens also love to eat kale, though I love it, too. I just grow lots of it. It makes the egg yolks especially rich and orange, and I heard it improves their nutritional value with more omega 3s. Yummy!
