That 40's Vogue Again...

Tuesday, January 7, 2014
Thanks so much for all of your kind comments on my last post - all that encouragement will certainly be a help when my will is waning (as I'm sure it no doubt will!). It's also very exciting that some of you are also up for the challenge of not buying any new (or new to you) clothing this year. Perhaps we need to start a club so we can call on each other for help when we are on the verge of pushing 'Make Payment' on our over stuffed virtual shopping carts?  Let me know if you're interested and I'll sort something out.

Moving right along. This is my third version of Vogue 8728. It is not however, my first make of 2014. In fact, I made it last year around September just before we left Sydney, and never got around to photographing it.

I won't go into any construction details because I did all that when I blogged about my first version here - and just in case you were wondering, yes, I do address the gathering at the bust! And then, if you felt like seeing my second version, it's blogged right here.

This green version is made out of a beautiful, soft, wool blend knit that came in the form of a 3metre remnant on sale (does anyone else think '3metre remnant' is a bit of an oxymoron?). I still have some left and am scheming up a plan to turn it into a 40's-ish long sleeved top for winter - we'll see how that goes.

Speaking of green, can someone please remind me to make more green things? I love this colour but I seem to have tunnel vision when looking at fabric and am always attracted to blues.

It's pretty safe to say that all three of these dresses have become wardrobe staples for me. I wear one of the three versions at least once a week because they are so comfortable and so easy to wash and wear. Also, since they are knit, they don't require an iron which is a major bonus since almost all of my other dresses do.

I really do need to make more knit dresses - any suggestions?

xx

  2. I agree that this is an excellent color. As far as patterns, if you don't mind a simple style then the Lady Skater from Kitschy Coo is good.

    1. Oooh, yes, the Lady Skater. I really do need to give that one a go don't I?

  3. You need to wear more green! You look beautiful in this style and color.
I really like Cake Pattern's Red Velvet knit dress. It's got a really different skirt pleat, an adorable petal collar and is super easy to adapt style wise.

  4. You look lovely! That green is a pretty colour on you. Have you tried the Lady Skater Dress yet? I've already made 3 versions.

  5. Oh I am right with you on the blue thing, I have made a RIDICULOUS amount of blue dresses and yet keep buying more blue fabric. It's so mean to the other colours! Love this dress, I am hoping to finally make it after purchasing the pattern like maybe 2 years ago...

  6. I recommend the butterick "perfect knit dress"which I blogged about (it was in my top five makes of the year too!) It's pretty, but I recommend some stuff in my blog post to make it a success. I have another one made I haven't blogged yet. Love knit dresses! Yours is really pretty. The best version I've seen of this pattern :)

  7. Agree! More green, it's perfect on you!

Put me down for the shopping ban- will definitely give me a kick in the pants to get onto those intimidating/ less interesting projects that I seem to have been avoiding :P

  8. This is such a beautiful dress - I love the colour on you and the style is so flattering, I can certainly understand why it's a wardrobe staple!

And good luck with your plan for this year - I've also been toying with the idea of trying to not buy any new clothes this year. One, because I need to save, and two, because I have a very big stash that needs to get used!!!

    1. Yes, I need to shop my stash as well! A good way to try and get it used up me thinks :)

  10. Gawd I love each iteration of these dresses! What a beautiful and comfortable style, which a gorgeous vintage twist! And this green colour really is divine! I've made one version of this dress and even though I cut the smallest size out (and I'm certainly not that small!), it ended up too big! I don't know how or why, but I am tempted to try again as it's such a pretty style!

    1. This dress is so weird with it's sizing! I would recommend pinning the un-gathered bust to your dress form, placing the shoulders where you want them to end up, and gathering in the excess that way. It really helps to get the bust gathers to end up the size you want them too.

I hope you make another version!

  11. This is so cute and really flattering! I love this dress on you! The Victory Patterns Lola dress is another knit dress that's really cute-- probably better for cooler weather than yours, but it's a nice pattern!

hav you seen the new top from deer and doe, simple and cute.
I'd be interested in a no ready made club, with exception for underwear, even thou i'd like to make that to, would need some encouragement support there.

  14. If you are anything like me, you'll find the more things you sew that fit well, the more shopping is frustrating because nothing fits quite right.
I love this green on you and the pattern is gorgeous.

  18. I've loved all three of these. Really stylish but easy to wear. A winning pattern, I'd consider buying it but I'm flat chested so it wouldn't flatter me

  19. You seem to have found the perfect dress pattern for you but I understand wanting to try something new. I'm doing the shopping ban (with the exception of shoes, underwear and swimsuits- not up for sewing that yet). I am interested in the no ready made club/list too.

  22. Green is my favorite color & I just love this. Did you put a zipper in this version? I know a lot of people making it out of a knit omit one.

I'd have to recommend Sewing Cake Red Velvet dress as well - and/or her Tiramisu dress. Both are staples & are incredibly comfortable & stylish.

  23. Love this dress, it looks stunning on you, green is one of my favourite colours and come to think of it most of my sewing successes for myself have been green. Just stumbled across your blog and am going to follow as I am keen to do a yr of no clothes buying - only making for myself and your blog very motivational thanks
