A New Job...

14th April 2010

First of all, thank you so much for your comments on my last post. They really did mean a lot, and while its not a pleasant experience to go through by any means, its nice to know others are in/have been in the same boat.

My solution to this problem - lets all move to the same place at the same time and we could all be friends with each other - hows that?

I've had some great news on the job front - I am officially employed! I start on Monday (19th April
). I'm really excited and also really nervous and I've started to doubt whether I can actually do the job I've been employed to do! What if I suck (for lack of a better term) at my new job and they don't like me and want to fire me?

I also now work in a semi-corporate environment. At my last job, you could wear whatever you wanted as long as you did your job well and weren't breaking any laws in the process. Most of the clothing I have here at the moment are vintage summer dresses that aren't really appropriate for the office or for the slowly dropping temperatures. I really do need the rest of my clothes to arrive now please!

Kitten Boo in the background - his introduction is coming!!

I did go and buy a few bits and pieces of office appropriate wear yesterday, just to get me through until the bulk of my clothing eventually arrives. I will of course, be taking some liberties with my dress in the office though - don't worry, I will not turn completely black, grey and white! There are some lovely bloggers who work in the corporate world who I will be taking inspiration from and if you have any inspiration you can point me to, I am all eyes!

Congratulations! I'm sure you'll be fantastic. As per office wear - it's amazing what a cardigan or blazer can do to "office up" an outfit :)

Congratulations, that's FANTASTIC news! :)

I've learned that you can almost make anything look corporate (I wear my summer-y dresses all the time!) with the addition of a blazer thrown over the top of it, if that helps!

Congratulations on the new job! That is wonderful! Oh, you will do fine. There is always a bit of learning involved and there is no way your employers would fire you without letting you learn first.

As for what you asked on my blog, about going home, the sad fact is we won't be moving back for a while. Years. This may be okay if I get the job I am currently vying for. Money really does have an impact on enjoyment of new places. Isn't it just the worst?

how exciting! You'll do great. I think everyone has that moment of panic when they get a job after looking for awhile. I know I did!

I adore this dress. It's so beautiful and colorful and fun!

Hello, well done on getting the job! I'm sure you will meet loads of people through there. As for Sydney and meeting people, it is tough. I came to Sydney eons ago and the through art school I made a few friends who I have managed to keep. I find the problem in Sydney is so many people are so busy all the time and we live such long distances away! However my best tip is do courses etc in your own interests and that's where you'll find your kindred spirits. xx

Congratulations on the new job! It's good to hear that you are enjoying Sydney. Where are you living at the moment?

Also, when I said we should catch up Sydney I wasn't just being polite - I do mean it! I have moved to Sydney from Melbourne and while I 'know' a couple of people I do agree with you it is hard to properly make new friends. For instance I have noone I know at the moment who shares my love of vintage and op shopping! So please please call me (don't want to sound too desperate, lol). I will e-mail you my phone number. Am on night shift at the moment and am going to NZ next week (including your home city Dunedin) but hopefully can we be friends after that? :)

congratulations! i am so happy for you to have found a job!

where i work, i am one of the few people supposed to wear uniform. however, i have found that i can strech things pretty far on most of the days (soft coloured shirts/tops under the uniform jacket instead of white ones, for example), and people aren't too hard on me since i actually haven't gotten my proper uniform yet (i just took whichever black blazer i could find at home). so i'm looking forward to seeing your businesslooks!

I agree with the others, a cardi or blazer will work wonders. Also, remember that in most offices there's a bit more leeway on Fridays as to dress :)

congrats on the new job. love your vintage style... hopefully you can incorporate it at work more in the future!

A big congrats on the job! :) I'm sure you'll do splendidly (although I can fully sympathize with your fears; I go through that all the time! :)! I can't wait to see what fun outfits you put together that are work appropriate. Although it's been ages since I worked at an office, I do remember being depressed by how dully so many people dressed. Adding a little splash of personality and flair always goes a long way in boosting your own morale! :)

Your dress is so pretty! I just love that you paired it with the wide, white belt...

Well I for one would give promotions based on cute summer vintage dresses, but then again, I'm not your boss... your kitty is so cute!

Congrats on your new job! You look adorable in this dress, too! I used to work at a job with a similar dress code. Have you tried "dressing" down a dress with a simple cardigan and basic pumps? That worked for a few of my vintage pieces.

Yay, congratulations on the new job, how exciting! In case your office-wear doesn't arrive in time, just team your sundresses with a sharp blazer and "adult flats", and you are good to go!

Oh I can't wait to get older and have an excuse to wear high-waisted pencil skirts with oxford heels all day! People look kind of funny at me when I wear those to school. Your kitty looks adorable by the way!
